Purchasing the right rod and reel combination for fishing can be confusing, especially for those new to the sport or unfamiliar to this area. So here's a few basic guidelines I use when shopping for a new rod or reel.

First, decide what # test line you will be using.

For lighter baits such as free-lined live shrimp, or lures up to 5/8 of an ounce I prefer to use 8# line while for larger plugs such as the Rapala Skitterwalk, or live baits such as mullet or pigfish, I prefer to use 12# on a rod rated for up to 3/4 to 1 ounce lures.

Typically a rod or reel manufacturer will rate their product for a range on line weights. A good rule of thumb that has always worked for me is to purchase a rod where my chosen line test is somewhere in the lower middle of the rod's line rating, For instance, the rod I use for 8# test is rated by the manufactuerer for 6-12 # test. When buying a reel, I look for one that holds close to 200 yards of the line (mono) that I am using.

Rods also are rated for "action". For 8# line I like a medium light to medium action, for 12#, a medium to medium heavy action. This is also better for fishing around mangrove shorelines or other areas where hangups are possible.
